An event held in Italy that honored the work of the São Carlos School of Engineering aims to strengthen ties between academia and the productive sector, bringing together global experts in industrial engineering and operations management

.
Researchers from the Production Engineering Department of USP’s São Carlos School of Engineering were part of the international team that won first place in the Green Transition Award and second place in the Best Paper Award, during the 31st edition of the International Joint Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IJCIEOM), held between June 23 and 25 at Polytechnic University of Bari, Italy.
The award-winning work, entitled Exploring the Role of Open Innovation and Artificial Intelligence for Green Innovation: A Dynamic Capabilities Approach, is the result of a collaboration between institutions in Brazil, Spain and Australia. The research was developed by doctoral student Vitor Melão Cassânego, from the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), by professors Herick Fernando Moralles, from UFSCar, Daniel de Mattos Nascimento, from the University of Barcelona (Spain) and Guilherme Luiz Tortorella, from the University of Melbourne (Australia), and by doctoral student Giovana Degaspari Pinto, who represented USP through the Graduate Program in Production Engineering at EESC, under the supervision of professor Daisy Aparecida do Nascimento Rebelatto, from the Department of Production Engineering.
The study investigated, from the perspective of dynamic capabilities, how open innovation partnerships and the use of artificial intelligence could boost the development of green innovations in products and processes. Based on data from approximately 1,780 companies in 93 countries, the results showed that organizations investing in strategic partnerships and the development of AI technologies were better prepared to promote sustainable and innovative practices.
The research also revealed that the impact of these initiatives is more significant in processes than in products, offering concrete subsidies for companies and public policy makers to accelerate the transition to environmentally responsible business models.
Recognized as one of the most relevant events in the field, IJCIEOM seeks to bring academia and the productive sector closer together, gathering experts in industrial engineering and operations management from around the world.
