California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed legislation Monday that would have allowed colleges to provide preferential admissions to applicants directly descended from people who were enslaved in the U.S. before 1900. The governor said that the bill wasn’t needed because schools are already have the authority to determine whether to provide such preferences, and he urged them to explore "how, when, and if this type of preference can be adopted."
