The Bavaria–São Paulo Museum Network is a multidisciplinary initiative that recognizes museums as central spaces for the preservation of memory and identity, as well as strategic environments for the production and dissemination of knowledge. Researchers from USP – one of the universities participating in the network – took part in the seminar Bavaria meets São Paulo: A Dialogue on Cooperation in Museology, held in Germany from September 13 to 21.

This was the second event organized by the Bavarian University Center for Latin America (Baylat), which maintains ongoing collaboration with research and funding institutions, government agencies, and universities in both Germany and Latin America. Other members of the network include the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), the São Paulo State University (Unesp), and the Belas Artes University Center.

The program included technical visits and meetings at various institutions across Bavaria. Fourteen institutions were visited, where discussions focused on the diversity of collections and the challenges of their conservation, research, and dissemination. The seminar held in Turnau on September 16 – supported by the University of Bayreuth – brought together professors and students interested in developing collaborations in museology. Another highlight was the meeting with Anton Biebl, coordinator of the governmental program Museums Offensive, which seeks to strengthen ties between museums and society, a moment considered crucial for aligning ongoing strategies in both São Paulo and Bavaria.

According to Irma de Melo-Reiners, Baylat’s executive director, the network has been under development since 2022 through initiatives aimed at connecting universities, museums, and specialists from different regions. The goal is to strengthen the exchange of experiences, practices, and ideas in the fields of culture, education, science, memory, and museology. “The mission reinforces a strategic moment for international cooperation and the deepening of research, teaching, and outreach partnerships between museums in São Paulo and Bavaria,” says Talita Roell, from USP’s Museum of Zoology.

The network’s first workshop took place in 2024 at USP’s School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (FMVZ). Titled São Paulo–Bavaria Meeting: Cooperation between Museums, the event brought together over 60 professionals from institutions in São Paulo and Bavaria. As a follow-up, Baylat organized a second round of activities in Bavaria, focusing on strengthening strategic partnerships and developing multidisciplinary research projects.

With the consolidation of the network, researchers aim to advance cross-cutting, multidisciplinary initiatives. The Bavaria–São Paulo Museum Network remains open to collaborators in both regions who wish to engage.
