Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can restore communication for people who have lost their speech to a stroke or neurological disease, but these systems have thus far been developed mostly for English speakers. This week, in the journal Science Advances, a group of researchers reported success in "decoding" Mandarin speech from the neural signals of a healthy person as she spoke—and, in a first, generated Chinese text onscreen in real time.
