On October 22 and 23, the University took part in meetings with two European university alliances, in which USP is the only representative from Latin America

On October 23, USP President Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior took part in the General Assembly of the Una Europa university alliance. The event, organized by the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), was held at the headquarters of the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB) in Madrid, Spain. This marked USP’s first participation in the meeting since joining the network in June, following an invitation from Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, one of the alliance’s members.
Una Europa brings together eleven leading universities from Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain, and Poland. The initiative focuses on six thematic areas: Cultural Heritage, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Europe and the World, Materials and Technologies of the Future, One Health, and Sustainability.
The meeting in Madrid gathered university leaders from member institutions, as well as representatives from invited Latin American universities. During the session, the presidents approved a joint declaration reaffirming their commitment to building a bi-regional knowledge space. The declaration emphasizes the role of universities as drivers of progress and establishes a foundation for collaboration in education, research, and innovation.
“This is the first time that such a structured and bidirectional academic cooperation has been established between European and Latin American universities,” said Joaquín Goyache, President of UCM. “Diplomacy often reaches where governments cannot,” he added.
The university leaders committed to fostering mobility among students, researchers, and faculty; developing joint education and research programs; and promoting open science and multilingualism. They also pledged to focus on the alliance’s six priority areas. According to the declaration, future actions will include the mutual recognition of academic credentials, the creation of inter-university programs, and the development of initiatives with social impact in local communities.
Later that day, Carlotti participated in a roundtable discussion moderated by Rosario Cristóbal, UCM’s Vice-President for International Relations, Cooperation, and Volunteering. The session also featured Peter Mathieson, President of the University of Edinburgh; Christine Leduc, President of Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne; and Karla Planter, President of the University of Guadalajara. The discussion addressed the role of universities in a changing world, the challenges of bi-regional cooperation, and the transformative potential of international projects such as those promoted by Una Europa.

Global health
On October 22, USP President Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior attended the meeting of the European University Alliance for Global Health (EUGLOH) at the University of Porto, in Portugal. USP recently became a member of the alliance.
EUGLOH is a consortium of nine European universities working together to address pressing global health challenges. These include public health and emerging diseases, climate change, environmental risks, digital technologies, and predictive, preventive, participatory, and personalized medicine. One of the network’s main goals is to promote transnational exchange and cooperation among students and researchers from member institutions.
“USP is the only Latin American university taking part in these alliances, which makes it possible to develop a range of joint initiatives with these institutions. The European alliances are open and receptive, and these partnerships can strengthen our teaching and research efforts,” said Carlotti.
The USP delegation also included Maria Dolores Montoya Dias, Dean of the School of Economics, Business Administration, and Accounting (FEA); Sérgio Proença, President of USP’s Agency for National and International Academic Cooperation (Aucani); and Fernando Dias Menezes de Almeida, Administrative Director of the São Paulo Research Foundation (Fapesp) and professor at USP’s Law School (FD).
